A Small Space is quite simply a small window, but despite it's size this little space pops with an abundance of creativity and artistic passion. A beautiful French cafe named La Niche plays host to this space on Smith Street in Fitzroy, whilst preparing delicious French comfort food and the much needed coffee.
La Niche Cafe celebrates and invites new and established artists to explore A Small Space. Installations change every month and each display is unique to La Niche and A Small Space.
Through this project, La Niche aims to support local artists by giving them the opportunity to exhibit work to a larger audience and outside of a traditional gallery backdrop.
Owner / Monsieur Anthony
At La Niche, our focus is on providing good, simple, fresh food served in a comfortable and artistic atmosphere, coupled with great live music. We use the highest quality produce from regional independent suppliers whilst keeping true to the traditional French cuisine.
Anthony and Amanda opened La Niche in 2005 wanting to bring to Melbourne the kind of places Anthony used to have in Brittany, France, where he grew up.
Founder / Peter Summers
"My local hang out in Collingwood is at La Niche cafe on Smith Street. Coffee is the order of the morning and an interesting conversation. Having my usual coffee before embarking on another day in the studio, it occured to me that Anthony, the owner, was neglecting a small space at the front of the cafe. Having a moment of clarity, I saw this small alcove as having the potential to become an innovative space for visual artists.
Monsieur Anthony was very pleased with the idea. It was far better proposal than a black and white television sitting on an old chair as a way of attracting attention. So, 'a small space' was born.
Peter Summers is an artist of fifteen years. His studio is located in Collingwood. This year he moves to Shanghai in search for new opportunities to promote and support other artists.
